I usually never put much effort into finding a place to eat. Since I noticed this about myself I decided I would try to seek out interesting places to grab a bite while on our trip this go around. I can usually nail down the breweries with no problem (duh) and more often than not I eat at the breweries because I believe there is nothing better than a burger and a beer. Unless is nachos and a beer… or tacos and a beer – OK it’s really burgers and beer – but I won’t lie – I love pub food!

Located just down the street from the Idaho State Capitol building is Bitter Creek Alehouse. The street is lined with many restaurants to choose from but let’s be honest – am I going to pass up a place called “alehouse” most likely not.

I approached the host and asked for a table outside and as usual had to brush off the “is someone meeting you”. I could rant about this for an hour that people find other people who dine alone some sort of social leper…. but that’s for another time.

I perused the beer list and quickly found out that the “alehouse” did not produce their own beer. I asked the waitress to confirm and she said “we support the local breweries by showcasing their beers”. No worries but I always love to drink crafted beer at the “source”. I tried Angel’s Perch from Sockeye Brewing – which is a brewery from Boise Idaho… so at least I kept it local. It was a tasty amber beer and I probably could have spent all day drinking this beer (not the same beer, but several of them… if you haven’t figured it out by now I’m no lightweight)

Street Tacos at Bitter Creek Ale House

My food arrived and I was delighted. I had ordered the street tacos. After one bite I have to say – amazeballs! I ordered the chicken taco (your other choice is braised pork – which I’m sure is delightful as well) but what made this taco extra amazing was the spicy habanero sauce. I know I didn’t try anything else on the menu – but I totally recommend the tacos.

I finished my lunch and it was time for my next beer. Although it was a warm summer day it was rare to see this beer on a menu and I just had to have it! I ordered the W00tstout (also known as Stone Farking Wheaton W00tstout). W00tstout is not made in Idaho but California.  If you’re a treky nerd (I’m not to the point that I know star dates and stuff – but I did watch Star Trek) you may know who helped craft W00tstout in conjunction with Stone Brewing. The one and only Wesley Crusher… Well OK actually Wil Wheaton. I had been reading about W00tstout all over twitter (because yes I follow Wheaton – PS he’s hilarious) for months now and figured if I had the opportunity why not take it even if a stout was an odd choice for a warm summer day.

The beer arrived and I took a sip. It was an interesting combination of sweet and heavy – does that make sense… probably not. It really was unlike any beer I have ever had. I’m no expert on stout beer but it had a unique taste to it and if I were more accustom to drinking stout beer I sure it would have been amazeballs.

In my old age I have gravitated to lighter beer – I’m not saying to the Buds and Coors Lights but to Ambers and IPA’s – I still have my dignity. Although in my earlier beer drinking days I could be quoted as to saying “I don’t drink it if you can see through it”… that was before I realized Guinness (one of my favorites) had one of the lowest alcohol contents and highest calorie contents… I’ve already admitted that I’m a drinker – that combination spells disaster :-)

If you would like to visit Bitter Creek Alehouse they are located at 246 North 8th Street. They are open 11am to “late”. Note the kitchen closes at 10pm Monday – Thursday and 11pm Friday and Saturday. Their menu is an upper class pub menu with reasonable pricing (nothing above $20). There is indoor and outdoor seating but if it’s a nice summer day I recommend the outdoor seating – they have a cool covered awning that shades you from the heat!
